The fire alarm was sounded this noon caused by the burning of the roof of a tro story frame building on Third, be tween Harnett and Swann streets, occu pied by colored persons, and owned by Messrs J. II. Chadbourn & Co. The fire department was on the spot in an incred bly short space of time and put the fire out. The damage was but slight and will be easily repaired. For the Holidays. Messrs. D. A. Smith & Co. will catch a large portion of the Christmas trade, not only in the way of furniture and house furnishing goods but in the line of toys and fancy goods for gifts forthe'lit tle ones. The proprietors and the clerks are now all as busy as bees opening and displaying the many beautiful things they have provided, and especially in the five and ten cents department. As for fur niture, they havo an almost unlimited supply, covering three large floors, much of which has been brought in during the the lastthirty days. Saturday afternoon a cob pie of bolts of unbleached domestic was discovered to be on fire under a counter in the store of Mr. J. Sampson, ou' MaTket street. It is very generally thought and talked of, that the Market bell soands much clearer And more distinct in its new quarters than it has ever sounded. "We wera told by a gentleman this morn ing lhat he heard the , "turn-out" bell so distinctly on the Corner of Fourth and Brunswick streets that;he Bpoke of it to others who agreed with him in the asser tion that it was ranch moro distinct than it has ever been. Two reasons ere as signed for the clearness of tho bell in its new quarters. One is that it ia now above the level of the surrounding house tops and tho sound rises and h not dead ened by the buildings; tho other Js that the belfry is close and tight, which augments the sound. Well, raay-be. For want and age, eave while you may j No morning sun shines all the day. Moral: Insure in tho Union Mutual, tf Jxo. W. GoRDOS fe Bro,, Agta. Called llceilDS otTOft BoAPd ot AI dermen. The Board of Aldermen met in called session this morning, at 10 o'clock, all of the Board being present. The Mayor stated that he bad called the Board together for tho purpose of getting the views of the Aldermen rela tive to the sale of the old Market, as to whether it should be sold at publie auction or by sealed bids. Alderman Myers offered the following resolution which was adopted: Resolved, That the sale of tho old Market House advertised for to-day be withdrawn and that sealed bids be adver tised for the purchase and sale of same as it now Btands, the building to be re moved by or before January 7th, 1881, and that the bids be opened at a meeting of this Board on or before the 20th inst.. the city reserving the right to reject all bids. The Board then adjourned. A Confidence Man Foiled That there are some sharp, shrewd and bold thieves in this city admits of no doubt , and the citizens should be ever on their guardor them. The light-fingered gentry are up to all kinds of dodges, and" art often so bold as to displace any suspicion against them. On Saturday afternoon a well-dressed, gentlemanly Jooking white man knocked at the doer of a residence on Second near the corner of Nun street, and told the servant that Mrs. Smith was ever at Mrs. Jones' and begged him to tell her to come over immediately. The'seryant informed the stranger that there was.no one but herself in the house and that she certainly would not leave it open, but when the other servant, who was in the neighborhood, returned, 6he would go over. "Nor says the man, "Mrs. Smith says come immediately ; but do as you please; I have delivered the message." The man, finding that the girl would not leave the house, walked off Mrs. S., who'was dewn street, returned in about a half hour, when the servant related the circumstance and offered her excuse for not obeying tho summons.- Mrs. Smith waa very much surprised, and stated that she had not seen or spo ken to Mrs Jone3 that day. It is very evident that, the would-be thief knew that Mrs. S." was out and tried to get the servant to leave the house unprotected, so that he could have full play. TTe have used the names Smith and Jones, as the ladies whose names the thief nsed are not anxious to appear in print, bat have kindly permitted us to relate the .circumstance, n order to place othtrs cm their guard.
